New Delhi, 12 May 2026:<\/strong> A disturbing case of alleged harassment and assault involving two women from Northeast India has surfaced from Delhi\u2019s Nehru Place area, triggering widespread outrage and renewed concerns over the safety and treatment of Northeastern communities in the national capital.

The Delhi Police on Monday (May 11, 2026) detained four persons for allegedly attacking and molesting two women. The incident reportedly took place around 7 a.m. on Sunday in the Nehru Place area of South Delhi.

According to the victims, the women from Assam and Nagaland had stepped out for tea near the parking area behind INOX at Nehru Place when a group of men on motorcycles allegedly made obscene gestures, catcalled them, and later physically assaulted them after they objected to the behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the victims, while speaking to the media, stated that the confrontation escalated after she protested against the alleged harassment. She claimed that the accused surrounded them, slapped one of the women, tore their clothes, physically assaulted them, and behaved inappropriately in public.

The victim further alleged that despite crying for help, no one intervened, even though a large crowd had gathered at the spot. According to her statement, several bystanders recorded videos of the incident instead of helping them.

The women also expressed disappointment over the initial response from the police, alleging that authorities appeared \u201ccasual\u201d about the matter until the Northeast Cell and social activists intervened.

The incident has once again highlighted longstanding concerns regarding racial discrimination, harassment, and insecurity faced by people from Northeast India living in metropolitan cities like Delhi. Many students and professionals from the region reside in the capital for education, employment, and other opportunities, but incidents of racial slurs, discrimination, and attacks have repeatedly raised alarm.

Reacting to the incident, Tripura royal scion and founder of the Tipra Motha Party, Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, shared a strong message on social media:

Delhi Police have confirmed the arrest of four accused in connection with the case. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammed Fahad, Mohammed Savej, Mohammed Arif, and Mohammed Faheem.

The victims have demanded strict action against the accused and stronger safety measures to ensure women especially those from Northeast India can live and move freely without fear in the national capital.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
