Tripura, 10 May 2026:<\/strong> The tragic death of SPO jawan Ajendra Tripura, a resident of Rathpara in Ganda Twisa subdivision under Dhalai district, has once again highlighted the uncertain future and lack of social security faced by thousands of Special Police Officers (SPOs) in Tripura. After his untimely demise while returning from election duty, it was his fellow colleagues not the government who came forward to support his grieving family financially by collecting contributions among themselves.

The fatal accident took place on March 31, 2026. Ajendra Tripura, who had served as an SPO jawan for nearly 20 years with dedication, lost his life after a bus hit him while he was returning to Ganda Twisa Police Station upon completing election duty.

Several members and leaders of the SPO organization, including Avani Shil, Indra Mani, Dipankar Das and Hira Mohan Debnath, were present while handing over the financial assistance to the bereaved family. They stated that standing beside the family of a deceased colleague during such a difficult time was their moral responsibility.

Speaking emotionally, the wife of the deceased jawan alleged that despite her husband serving the government for two decades, the family has not received any meaningful support or security after his death. She said the four-member family is now struggling to survive amid severe uncertainty.

According to the SPO organization, nearly 137 SPO personnel have lost their lives due to various reasons over the years. However, they claim that no government neither the previous Left Front administration nor the current BJP government has effectively stood beside the families of most deceased SPOs.

Across Tripura, SPO jawans work alongside the regular police force in police stations, outposts, election duties, riot control, night patrolling and crime prevention operations. Despite playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order, many of them continue to work as temporary personnel without proper job security.

The organization further alleged that in many cases SPOs are also made to perform personal household duties for officers, including cooking, washing clothes and escorting children to school. Despite such responsibilities, they reportedly receive only around \u20b912,000 per month as allowance, which is insufficient to support a family in today\u2019s economic conditions.

The SPO organization also recalled that during the 2018 Assembly election campaign, promises were made regarding regularization of SPO jobs, salary hikes and social security benefits. However, even after eight years, those promises remain largely unfulfilled, they alleged.

Political observers believe that although SPOs have become indispensable to the functioning of many police stations and outposts in Tripura, they are still deprived of permanent status, fixed salary structures, insurance coverage, pension facilities and financial protection for families in case of death while on duty.

The incident has once again raised a larger question: if personnel who risk their lives while serving the state cannot receive basic security and dignity, then how meaningful are promises of good governance and development for those working at the grassroots level?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
