Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha said that if the BJP-led government is serious about women’s empowerment, it should table the bill without delay, assuring that the Congress would extend full support.

Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan on Sunday, Saha criticized the Centre over what he described as inaction on the “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.” He alleged that despite tall claims, the ruling party has failed to take concrete steps toward ensuring greater political representation for women.

The issue has sparked a broader national debate, with both the BJP and opposition parties trading charges. While BJP leaders have accused opposition parties of delaying the bill during the recent special session of Parliament, opposition voices have countered with allegations of political posturing.

Saha argued that the bill must be implemented in its current form without linking it to future delimitation exercises. He further claimed that the situation of women, particularly those from Dalit, backward, tribal, and minority communities, remains concerning in several BJP-ruled states. Referring to recent findings, he said such issues have also been highlighted in official reports.

Highlighting the Congress party’s legacy, Saha maintained that it has consistently worked towards safeguarding women’s rights and promoting their empowerment. He also launched a sharp attack on the RSS, alleging that its ideological stance has historically been opposed to women’s empowerment.

In a separate development, Saha criticized the Tripura government’s decision to cancel recruitment for Special Executive posts in the police department. He alleged a recurring pattern in which recruitment notifications are issued, candidates apply, and after prolonged delays in the selection process, the entire exercise is abruptly scrapped.

Terming the cancellation as “administrative drama,” he said such actions not only create uncertainty but also deepen frustration among unemployed youth. Saha urged the state government to adopt transparent and consistent recruitment practices to restore trust among job aspirants.

Agartala, 03 May: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee has called on the Central government to immediately introduce and implement the Women’s Reservation Bill based on the current strength of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha.
