The achievement is being viewed as a major boost to the state’s growing organic farming ecosystem.

The initiative was implemented under the minister’s guidance with active support from the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA). Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) and progressive farmers from multiple clusters—including Jirania, Lefunga, Hejamara, Mandai, Belbari, Jampuijala, Tulashikhar, Teliamura, Ampi, and Kalyanpur—participated in the cultivation drive.

According to official data, the results have surpassed expectations. While the average yield of conventional wheat in Tripura stood at 2.119 metric tonnes per hectare between 2018–19 and 2024–25, the organic wheat crop this season recorded a yield of 3.03 metric tonnes per hectare. This marks a substantial improvement over traditional practices and brings the state closer to the national average of 3.5 metric tonnes per hectare.

Minister Nath highlighted that the success reflects the strengthening of Tripura’s organic ecosystem and demonstrates the potential for diversifying crop production. He said the initiative would contribute not only to improved farm incomes but also to better nutritional security and sustainable agricultural practices.

He further credited the coordinated efforts of farmers, FPCs, and institutional support systems for achieving this breakthrough. “This success shows that organic farming in Tripura is no longer experimental but has matured into a viable and productive system,” Nath stated.

Looking ahead, the state government plans to expand organic wheat cultivation and promote seed production. There is also a focus on developing value-added industries such as organic flour processing and health-oriented food products, which could open new market opportunities for farmers.

TSOFDA Mission Director Rajib Debbarma, who was present during the announcement, emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative. The achievement is expected to strengthen Tripura’s position as an emerging hub for organic farming in the Northeast, aligning with broader goals of sustainability, self-reliance, and market-driven agricultural growth.

Agartala, 03 May: Tripura has reached a significant milestone in its agricultural journey with the state’s first successful harvest of organically grown wheat, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Sunday.
