The situation has raised serious concerns over law and order in the district.

In response, the Khowai district administration convened a crucial all-party meeting on Wednesday evening at the District Magistrate’s conference hall, aiming to restore normalcy and ensure communal harmony. Representatives from all major political parties, including Tipra Motha, BJP, Congress, and CPI(M), attended the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by District Magistrate Rajat Panth, in the presence of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nirmal Kumar Jha, Additional Superintendent of Police Justin Joseph, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer D. Khudia Rassu.

Heated Exchanges and Allegations

The discussion quickly turned heated, with multiple parties levelling serious allegations against each other.

BJP leaders alleged that their workers were attacked by Tipra Motha supporters soon after the election results were announced. They claimed that houses were vandalized and set on fire, forcing many to flee and seek refuge at the party office. Additionally, allegations were raised that displaced individuals were being asked to pay large sums of money to return to their homes.

Countering these claims, newly elected MDC Atul Debbarma from Tipra Motha denied all allegations, stating that the party does not believe in violence and is committed to maintaining peace. He instead accused BJP of filing false cases against Tipra Motha supporters, many of whom are currently in jail.

Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma also accused the police administration of acting in a biased manner. He alleged that the situation escalated after provocative speeches were made during election campaigns by the Chief Minister and BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee. He further questioned the police’s inaction in an incident where a Tipra Motha booth office in Belfang area under Ramchandraghat was vandalized during the election period.

CPI(M) Raises Relief Fund Issue

Meanwhile, CPI(M) representatives raised concerns over the alleged selective distribution of financial aid. They questioned the announcement of ₹25,000 compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for affected BJP workers, asking why similar support was not extended to CPI(M) supporters who suffered during previous election-related violence in 2018 and 2023.

This led to further arguments among party representatives during the meeting.

Despite the tense exchanges, the meeting concluded on a constructive note following intervention by district officials. Both sides assured that they would work towards maintaining peace and communal harmony in their respective areas.

MLA Ranjit Debbarma urged the administration to ensure a neutral and impartial role in handling the situation.

The district administration stated that strict measures will be taken to restore law and order. Security has been intensified in sensitive areas, and all political parties have been urged to refrain from any form of provocation.

Authorities also assured that displaced families would be assisted in safely returning to their homes at the earliest.

The situation remains sensitive, but efforts are underway to bring back stability in Khowai district.

Tripura, 29 April: Following the declaration of results of the ADC (Autonomous District Council) elections, several ADC areas in Khowai district have witnessed a surge in post-poll violence, creating an atmosphere of fear and tension across the region.
