Nowadays, many people are traveling abroad to explore popular tourist destinations. Throughout the year, tourists flock to different parts of the world, and in some places, the crowds are overwhelming. One such destination is Sreemangal in neighboring Bangladesh, famously known as the “land of two leaves and a bud.” The name of Sreemangal is deeply intertwined with tea, and its global reputation largely comes from its tea industry. As a result, it has become a preferred destination for many travel lovers.

From Kailashahar, crossing the Chatlapur border and traveling just 22 kilometers brings you to Sreemangal (sub-district). The region is covered with lush green tea gardens, attracting both domestic and international tourists every day. Due to this, Sreemangal has developed a wide range of accommodation facilities, including five-star hotels, smaller residential hotels, and restaurants.Sreemangal’s vast tea estates are significant, with around 43% of Bangladesh’s total tea production coming from this area. That is why it is often referred to as the “Tea Capital.” Surrounded by greenery, Sreemangal is also home to several ancient archaeological sites. One of the most notable among them is the Raj Kachari House of the Tripura Maharaja, located within the premises of the Sreemangal Land Office in Moulvibazar.

Every year, many Indian tourists visit this royal-era administrative building, and according to locals, foreign tourists also come to see this historical structure. However, due to lack of maintenance, this archaeological heritage is on the verge of disappearing.

There is growing demand from all quarters to restore and preserve the building to make it suitable for tourists. Unfortunately, the Bangladesh government has remained largely indifferent so far.

The Raj Kachari House now serves as the land office of Sreemangal. Historically, Sreemangal in Moulvibazar was once under the Kingdom of Tripura. Since the capital was far away, the Tripura Maharaja constructed this Kachari (administrative office) in the 8th century for collecting taxes and managing daily governance. The structure measures approximately 30 feet in length and 20 feet in width.

It consists of three large rooms, a veranda, eight doors, and nine windows. The walls are about 12 inches thick and built using lime-surki mortar. Adjacent to the building is a large pond with a paved ghat (steps). Locals say that the Tripura king used to visit this place riding elephants.

Today, this historic building stands on the brink of destruction, with the structure, pond, and ghat all gradually deteriorating. Although Sreemangal is one of Bangladesh’s major tourist regions, this royal Kachari House could become a key attraction if both the Bangladesh and Indian governments pay attention to its preservation.

An Indian tourist who recently traveled to Bangladesh and returned stated that the government of Bangladesh is not taking proper care of this important archaeological site. Since Moulvibazar was once part of the Tripura Kingdom, many returning tourists believe that if the Bangladesh government fails to act, then the Tripura government or the Government of India should step in. Proper attention could not only preserve this royal-era heritage but also turn it into a major tourist attraction.

Kailashahar, Anupam Pal: For travel enthusiasts, visiting foreign countries often feels like a dream but it is no longer unattainable.
