Agartala, Mar 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced Jahar Chakraborty as its candidate for the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly bypoll in Tripura, scheduled for April 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chakraborty previously contested from the seat in 2013 and is considered an experienced organisational figure.
The by-election has been necessitated following the death of sitting MLA and former Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen. Sen, 72, passed away in Bengaluru while undergoing treatment at a private hospital after suffering complications arising from a brain haemorrhage on December 26, 2025.
The Dharmanagar seat, located in North Tripura, is considered crucial for the ruling BJP, which currently has only 32 members in the 60-seat Assembly and is aiming to retain its hold on the constituency. Chakraborty\u2019s nomination is seen as a calculated move, given his organisational experience and connection with local voters.
