Tripura, 07 Feb 2026: <\/strong>In a bid to make Agartala city traffic-free, cleaner and safer, the Municipal Corporation has intensified its drive to remove illegal encroachments from footpaths and roads. As part of this initiative, the Municipal Commissioner Saju Wahid on Saturday conducted an on-ground inspection of several key locations in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection covered busy areas including Agartala\u2019s<\/strong> IGM Chowmuhani, Battala and Office Lane. The objective was to assess why vendors are not utilising designated vending zones and to identify new locations for parking spaces, vending zones and public-friendly \u201chappy spaces\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although multiple vending zones already exist in the city, authorities have observed that many vendors continue to operate on roads instead of the allotted areas. In addition, some traders have allegedly occupied footpaths illegally, contributing to congestion and inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to the media, Commissioner Saju Wahid said the civic body is re-assessing existing vending zones to understand the challenges faced by vendors. \u201cWe already have several vending zones in the city, but they are not being properly used. Many vendors are sitting on the roads. We want to understand the issues preventing them from using the vending zones and resolve those problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He clarified that the corporation is not against vendors or their livelihood. \u201cOur aim is to keep the city clean and safe and to remove road encroachments. Vendors can continue their business without affecting public safety or causing inconvenience,\u201d the Commissioner added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection team also included the Director of Urban Development, the CEO of Smart City, Assistant Commissioners and other senior officials. During the visit, the team identified additional locations where new parking facilities and vending zones can be developed following recent urban development works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commissioner further informed that licensed vendors currently operating illegally on roads will be immediately shifted to suitable alternative spaces. Simultaneously, plans are underway to develop new vending and parking spaces to ensure long-term solutions without disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Municipal authorities reiterated their appeal for cooperation from vendors and the public, stating that the ongoing eviction drive is aimed at improving urban mobility while ensuring proper rehabilitation for lawful vendors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
