The growing influx of tourists stands as a testament to the region’s natural beauty and enduring appeal. However, this rise in tourism has also brought several challenges that threaten the area’s cleanliness, tranquillity, and social values.

One of the major concerns is waste and littering, with increasing accumulation of plastic bottles, disposable plates, and other refuse observed in gardens, along roadsides, and in public spaces, posing serious environmental hazards. Noise pollution has also become a pressing issue, as loud music played from vehicles and tourist gatherings has disrupted community life, disturbed church services, and adversely affected the sick and elderly, undermining the peaceful atmosphere of the hills.
Another growing concern is the open consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances by certain tourists along roadsides and in public areas. Such behaviour sets a negative example for children, creates a sense of insecurity among women and families, and runs contrary to the social values and cultural traditions of the Jampui Hills community.

Addressing these concerns, Dr Zairemthiama Pachuau, General Secretary of the Mizo Convention, appealed to visitors to act responsibly. “We would like to humbly request our esteemed visitors and tourists to follow these three golden rules: do not litter, do not play loud music within village areas, and do not publicly consume alcohol, in order to maintain Jampui Hills as the cleanest and safest place in our state and also in India. Together, we can all contribute to achieving this,” he said.

Demonstrating strong community participation, more than 500 residents from all ten villages of the Jampui Hills—young and old, from all walks of life—volunteered on the day, actively cleaning roadsides, village streets, and key tourist locations as part of the initiative.

The press communiqué, signed by Mr Lalduhsanga Thangluah, President, and Mr Vanrokima Royte, General Secretary of the Youth Wing of the Mizo Convention, highlighted three key objectives of the programme: to raise awareness about responsible tourism and respect for local communities; to mobilise collective action to restore and maintain cleanliness; and to safeguard the tranquillity, cultural integrity, and reputation of Jampui Hills as Tripura’s cleanest region.

The MCYW has appealed to residents, visitors, and well-wishers to actively participate in the programme. Through collective responsibility and cooperation, Jampui Hills can continue to exemplify natural beauty, cleanliness, and cultural pride, further strengthening its position as a premier tourist destination and a source of pride for the state of Tripura.

The Mizo Convention Youth Wing (MCYW), Jampui, launched the “Clean Jampui Hills” initiative on 13 January 2026 to protect the environment, maintain cleanliness, and preserve the cultural integrity of Tripura’s cleanest region.
