According to family members and preliminary reports, Prashant was found unresponsive at his residence in Janakpuri, Delhi<\/strong>, on the morning of January 11, 2026<\/strong>. He had gone to bed normally the previous night but did not wake up. He was immediately taken to Mata Chanan Devi Hospital<\/strong>, where doctors declared him brought dead. The initial cause of death has been stated as a suspected cardiac arrest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on\u00a0January 4, 1983<\/strong>, in\u00a0Darjeeling, West Bengal<\/strong>, Prashant Tamang hailed from a\u00a0Nepali-speaking Gorkha family<\/strong>. His father, a serving officer in the West Bengal Police, died in an on-duty accident during Prashant\u2019s childhood. To support his family his mother, grandmother, and sister Prashant discontinued his studies and joined the\u00a0Kolkata Police<\/strong>\u00a0as a constable under compassionate appointment. Despite the demands of his job, he continued to pursue music, performing with the\u00a0Kolkata Police orchestra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prashant rose to national prominence in\u00a02007<\/strong>\u00a0after winning\u00a0Indian Idol Season 3<\/em>\u00a0on Sony TV. His soulful voice, emotional performances, and seamless blend of Hindi and Nepali songs struck a deep chord with audiences. His journey inspired massive support from the\u00a0Gorkha and Nepali communities<\/strong>\u00a0across India and abroad, turning his victory into a moment of immense regional pride. He won the competition by a significant margin, taking home a\u00a0\u20b91 crore cash prize<\/strong> along with a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After his win, Prashant released his debut album \u201cDhanyavad,\u201d<\/strong> featuring both Hindi and Nepali tracks.
