The program was organized by the Department of Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA).

Speaking on the significance of National Press Day, the Chief Minister highlighted the pivotal role of newspapers and journalists in sustaining democracy. He noted that freedom of expression and free speech are the lifeblood of the media, but journalists must remain vigilant while reporting, keeping social responsibility in mind.

“In the age of social media, people are getting misled by false and misleading information every day. All stakeholders must work together to counter this growing challenge,” he added.

Dr. Saha further remarked that Tripura’s journalists are no less capable than journalists from other states. He urged senior journalists to take the initiative to conduct monthly workshops to enhance the skills of the new generation, focusing on ethical journalism and modern reporting practices.

Referring to the two journalists who were killed in the state in the past, the Chief Minister assured that the government continues to pursue justice for them. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity, and welfare of journalists. Several committees have already been formed under the ICA Department for media welfare, and their recommendations will be implemented in phases, he noted.

Editor Shanith Debroy, speaking during the discussion, said journalists must uphold a heightened sense of ethical responsibility. For the media to serve the public interest, the administration must also ensure freedom for both journalists and media houses. He expressed hope that the state government would adopt necessary measures for strengthening the media sector in Tripura.

Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar pointed out that the evolution of media has brought both advantages and disadvantages. He clarified that, according to Press Council of India guidelines, social media is not recognized as a platform for journalism, yet intentional character assassination is rampant on these platforms.

Executive Editor Manas Pal elaborated on this year’s National Press Day theme, while ICA Secretary Dr. P.
