Agartala, October 3, 2025:<\/strong> A shocking incident of assault unfolded in front of Agartala City Centre on Durga Puja Dashami night (October 2), after a man protested against obscene remarks directed at his wife. The protest led to him being mercilessly beaten by a group of youths. Police have confirmed that one accused has been arrested, while others remain at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to eyewitness accounts, the couple was out near City Centre during the festive night when a group of youths allegedly made lewd comments towards the woman. When her husband objected, the situation escalated, and the group violently attacked him. Eyewitness testimonies reveal that the man was repeatedly punched and assaulted in full public view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victim\u2019s wife, speaking in distress, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was only replying after being pushed. Suddenly, one of them punched him hard and others joined in. They dragged him away while I tried to hold on. He was being beaten brutally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police officials deployed on traffic duty nearby confirmed receiving an urgent complaint of harassment. \u201cBy the time we reached, the victim was being badly beaten. From initial reports, it seems the husband protested after his wife faced obscene remarks. We have taken one person into custody,\u201d said an officer, adding that the injured man was first taken to IGM Hospital and later referred to GBP Hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women\u2019s Congress Stages Protest on October 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the aftermath, the Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress submitted a deputation at West Agartala Police Station on Friday (October 3), demanding the immediate arrest of all the accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tripura Pradesh Mahila Congress President Sarbani Ghosh Chakraborty, while addressing the media, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is not an isolated incident. Such cases of harassment are increasing, but victims often fear coming forward. The brutal assault in front of City Centre, in a crowded public space, proves that people no longer fear the law. A man was beaten, his wife was left traumatized, and even their child was injured. Is this the \u2018good governance\u2019 that is being celebrated?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further criticized the state administration and Chief Minister, alleging that leaders were busy attending puja inaugurations while law and order deteriorated. \u201cWhen women faint in shock after seeing their husbands attacked, when accused roam freely without fear, how can citizens feel safe in this state? We strongly condemn this so-called good governance,\u201d Chakraborty added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mahila Congress warned that unless all culprits are arrested and exemplary punishment is given, they will continue to agitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
